Visbiome Featured in Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News: Probiotic Improves Bile Acid Malabsorption

1 min read

New research is shedding light on the relationship between the gut microbiome and bile acid metabolism. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial led by researchers at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, evaluated the eight-strain De Simone Formulation® (found only in Visbiome®) in patients with a history of bile acid malabsorption. The study found significant changes in the gut microbiome and bile acid profile, including a reduction in the percentage of fecal primary bile acids. The study offers new insight into how the microbiome may influence bile acid metabolism and highlights an emerging area of gastrointestinal research.

“We often think about bile acid malabsorption primarily as a disorder of bile acid handling, but this study highlights the microbiome as a potentially modifiable component of that biology.”

“The significant reduction in fecal primary bile acids, together with measurable changes in the microbiome, suggests that a targeted probiotic intervention may be capable of influencing how bile acids are metabolized within the gut.”
